Hi everyone,

We would like to send a reminder that the deadline (September 1st, 2020) for applying for the Human-Centered Computing (HCC) PhD program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is fast approaching.

The HCC PhD program at UMBC is offered by the Department of Information Systems housed in the College of Engineering and Information Technology. The program was one of the first HCC PhDs offered and has recently grown substantially with the expansion of our faculty http://isrc.umbc.edu/people/faculty/. With the development of the Interactive Systems Research Center (ISRC), the program provides students with a truly interdisciplinary set of collaborators and research opportunities. We aim to support accepted PhD students through RA or TAships covering stipend, tuition, and healthcare.

We are looking for talented PhD applicants interested in one or more of the following HCC research areas:
* Participatory Design
* Usable Privacy
* DIY maker movement
* Multi-lingual Information access
* Affective computing
* Health Informatics
* Movement-based interaction
* Secure and Trustworthy Computing
* Ethics in Computing
* Computer Supported Cooperative Work

 The following specific research projects are in need of talented applicants:

* Usable Privacy and Security with Dr. Yaxing Yao - To measure and address the privacy concerns and expectations of various stakeholders in contexts like emerging technologies, the Internet of Things, smart homes, smart cities, and mobile devices.
* Affective Interaction in Simulation and Training with Dr. Andrea Kleinsmith - To investigate affective interaction in complex, real-world simulation and training situations. Seeking candidates with experience in Python and/or quantitative analysis methods.
* Privacy of Adaptive Assistive Systems for Vulnerable Populations with Dr. Helena Mentis and Dr. Foad Hamidi - To investigate the intersectional privacy perspectives of people with motor disabilities and older adults.
* Community-engaged Maker-based Learning for Youth with Dr. Foad Hamidi - To study the role of equity-based STEM learning and professional development programs in urban after school settings.

Faculty and students in the HCC PhD program come from a variety of disciplines and contribute to a program that integrates theory and practice to uncover new knowledge of importance to human-centered system design and use. The doctoral program provides the theoretical and practical foundations for research and leadership careers in academia and industry.

More information about the Human-Centered Computing PhD program can be found at hcc.umbc.edu or email the graduate program director, Dr. Ravi Kuber, at hcc-gpd@umbc.edu.
